Protecting your software investment
Came across this article on Computerworld today. It's nice to see industry pundits finally admitting that the Open Source software development model is of significant benefit to business...
Well, actually they didn't say that at all in the article itself, but the points that they raised, which are all quite valid, are perfectly addressed by the Open Source model.
The reality is no matter how you obtain your software you either have to modify your business process to fit the software capabilities or you have to modify the software to fit your business.
By ensuring you have the code (the Open Source model) you have the ability to either modify it in house or subcontract to the developer of your choice. Either way you, as the business owner, get to make the choice secure in the knowledge that the failure of any third party is not going to cause you problems.
Open Source... a win-win for everyone.
