NZOSS becomes a charitable society

The NZOSS is now a charitable society. Earlier in the year the NZOSS modified it's constitution in order to support it's application to gain charitable status. With those changes in place it was possible to move ahead with becoming a charitable society. A few days ago we received our registration documentation.

This was made possible by the society secretary, Carl Klitscher who drove the process of applying for charitable status and modifying our constitution in consultation with Government. This will enable us to conduct fund raising efforts for our various projects without tax implications.

It resolves one of the issues we have had around accepting donations from private individuals, as technically such money would be taxable income. Now we are a charitable society we will be able to accept donations which will be used for the objects of the society - advocating and supporting open source.
