Accounts 2009

The financial accounts for the New Zealand Open Source Society for the year ending March 31 2009 are attached.

We received $2,380 in subscriptions with a further $9,200 in donations throughout the year. Of the donations, $9,000 was received specifically for sponsorship of a tour of New Zealand by Richard Stallman. We would like to thank all those who have contributed to the finances of the NZOSS throughout the year. The major sponsorship we received allowed the NZOSS to fund an exceptional series of events throughout the country.

Our expenses ran to $8947.73 for the year which gave us a final profit of $2,638.29. The expenses were made up of Bank Fees, Domain Registration, production of The OpenDisc for SFD 2008 and reimbursements of out of pocket expenses incurred during Richard Stallman's tour. We were able to sponsor Richard Stallman and the Free Software foundation for the amount of $7,370.77.

We know of other small expenses that have been incurred by individual members from time to time throughout the year who have chosen not to present their receipts for reimbursement. We would like to acknowledge the choice that those members have taken and express our appreciation.

We ended the year with total assets of $5,004.31, up from $2,366.02 in the year ended 31 March 2008. This is still not a great deal of money however it does give us some working capital.

It should be noted that we do not as yet have Charitable status and we are relying on the approval of the constitution changes at this AGM to allow that application to progress. If the approvals for the constitution changes are not forthcoming then we will be liable for taxes on donation income at the prevailing corporate tax rate. The estimated taxes on donation income for the year ended 31 March 2009 would be approximately $2,500 after the applicable rebates. As noted earlier, we have sufficient funds to cover applicable taxes should the motion for the constitution change fail.
